Alendronate Sodium is a bisphosonate drug used to treat Paget’s disease, in which the bones are weakened and deformed. Alendronate sodium works by slowing the process of bone loss, preventing the risk of breaks, and reducing bone pain. This and other drugs should only be taken under the direction of a doctor with a complete and current list of medications and medical history. Read all instructions from your doctor and pharmacist. Your dosage of alendronate sodium may not be absorbed properly if you take with calcium or iron supplements, other vitamins, antacids, coffee, tea, soda, mineral water, and calcium-enriched foods or drinks. Patients who have a history of esophagus problems, trouble swallowing, difficulty standing for more than thirty minutes, low calcium, or stomach or kidney problems shouldn’t take this drug before discussing it with their doctor. While beneficial for treating Paget’s disease, this drug can cause serious jaw bone problems. Your physician should check your mouth before starting treatment, and patients should schedule regular dental exams. At onset of treatment, patients may experience minor side effects including stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas, or nausea. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Serious side effects, such as jaw/ear pain, swelling of joints or limbs, new or unusual hip/groin pain, black stool, or vomiting that looks like coffee grounds should be addressed immediately. For emergencies, seek emergency medical services.
