Amitiza belongs to the chloride channel activators class of drugs and is used to treat chronic idiopathic constipation and constipation caused from irritable bowel syndrome. Your doctor may also prescribe Amitiza to treat constipation caused by ongoing pain management drugs (narcotic medications). Amitiza decreases bloating and abdominal discomfort, improves stool texture, and lessens the pain and strain of bowel movements by increasing the amount of fluid in the intestines. This and other drugs should be used under the direction of a doctor with a complete and current list of medications and medical history, including allergies. Patients who have had an allergic reaction to lubiprostone, amitiza, or inactive ingredients commonly found in medications, you may have a reaction to Amitiza. At onset of treatment, patients may experience nausea, diarrhea, gas, vomiting, dry mouth, runny nose, cough, fever, headache, joint/back pain, or trouble sleeping. If these effects worsen or persist, talk with your doctor as soon as possible. It is possible for Amitiza to cause low blood pressure or fainting. Discontinue use of Amitiza and notify your doctor if you experience fainting, dizziness, severe diarrhea, or severe vomiting. After the first dose of Amitiza, a rare side effect may occur causing shortness of breath. This shortness of breath should occur within 30-60 minutes of taking Amitiza. If you experience tightness/discomfort/chest pain, seek medical help immediately. It’s important to follow manufacturer, pharmacy, and doctor’s instructions when using this and other medical products.
