This medication tries to reduce the HIV infection in the body, thereby helping immune system function. It also helps to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV disease-related complications.This medication does not cure the HIV infection, and neither does it prevent the virus from spreading to other via blood contamination or sexual contact.Atripla may be used to prevent the infection after coming into contact with HIV.WARNING:Severe Hepatomegaly and lactic acidosisMany fatal cases have been reported when individuals use nucleoside analogs such as tenofovir disoproxil fumarate with other antiretrovirals.HBV and HIV-1This medication should not be used as a treatment option for chronic cases of Hepatitis B. The efficacy and safety of Atripla has not been proven in individuals who are co-infected with HIV-1 and HBV.There are certain medications which are contraindicated while taking Atripla. This is an emergency medical problem, which needs to be treated in the hospital.Serious issues with the liver may occur such as liver englargement, and the presence of fat.Recurrence of HBV infectionSerious Psychiatric issues such as depression, suicide, anger, and strange thoughtsProblems with kidneys as indicated by muscle pain, muscle weakness, thirst and high quantity of urine.Other serious issues with the liver such as liver failure,  and hepatitisThinning of the bones can lead to frequent fractures, bone pain, and bone softeningSome of general side effects are:Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, trouble sleeping, unusual dreams, trouble with concentrationUpset stomachGashRashVomitingDiarrheaBody fat changesSkin discoloration such as freckles, spotsAllergic reactions, indigestion, stomach pain, and inflammation of the pancreasDo not stop taking this medication without first consulting your prescribing doctor. BEFORE TAKING ATRIPLA:Before starting this medication, inform your doctor if you have allergies to emtricitabine, tenofovir, or efavirenz, or if you are currently taking the following drugs:PropulsidVersed or HalcionSt. John WortVfendMigranal, Ergotrate, Ergomar, MethergineCombivir, Epivir, Trizivir, or EpzicomComplera, Emtriva, Viread, and SustivaTo ensure that you can safely consume this medication, inform your prescribing doctor if you currently have any of the following medical conditions:Kidney or liver diseaseHistory of injection-drug use, mental illness, or antipsychotic medication useSeizures or epilepsyOsteopeniaHepatitis C or BPregnant women should not consume this medication as it can cause harm to the unborn child. If you are expecting, inform your doctor immediately. It is recommended that you use two types of birth control, which includes a physical barrier and a spermicidal, for up to 12 weeks post treatment.The HIV infection may be passed on to your child, if you do take proper treatment. Take all your prescribed medications as instructed to control the infection.Women with AIDS or HIV should refrain from breastfeeding their babies, because the virus may be passed on through breast milk.People who have liver disease or are overweight are prone to developing lactic acidosis, a life-threatening medical condition.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:If an overdose is suspected, US residents should call their poison help line at 1800-222-1222. Symptoms of overdose include uncontrollable muscle movements.PROPER STORAGE OF ATRIPLA:This medication should be kept at room temperature 25 °C or 77 °F Keep this medication in the original container, tightly closed. Safely discard outdated medications.Keep this medication and others away from children and pets.
