This medication is used in the treatment of colon, rectal, and kidney cancers. It may also be used in the treatment of certain forms of brain tumors and lung cancer.Bevacizumab is the main ingredient in Avastin. It blocks the VEGF protein which is responsible for supplying blood to the tumor. As a result, the tumor’s growth slows down and it eventually dies.This medication is given in conjunction with other cancer medications.WARNING:On rare occasions, bloody vomit, bleeding inside the lungs, and/or a tear might occur in the intestines or stomach, from taking this medication. Seek emergency medical care if you experience any of the following symptoms:Severe abdominal or stomach painVomiting or constipationFeverBloody or black stoolsBlood in the vomitCoughing bloodBefore having any surgery, inform your surgeon that you are taking this medication.SIDE EFFECTS:This medication may cause an uncommon yet serious neurological disorder which affects the brain. Symptoms to look out for are confusion, tiredness, weakness, headaches, seizures, and fainting. These symptoms may appear within hours after the first dose or appear after a year of having been on this treatment. Telephone your doctor immediately if you experience any one of these responses.Some people may react to the injection when it is infused. Inform your caregiver if you are feeling nauseated, sweaty, dizzy, wheezing, or light-headed while the injection is being administered.Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following responses which indicate allergies to the medication.HivesDifficulty breathingSwelling of the throat, lips, face, and tongue Speak to your prescribing doctor if any of the following serious side effects should occur such as:Wounds that won’t healSevere pain in the stomach accompanied by fever, constipation, and vomitingPresence of blood in the stool or urine, vomit that has the appearance of coffee groundsBruise easily, unusual bleedingChills, fever, fly symptoms, body aches, sores in the mouth or throatSudden weakness or numbness, confusion, problems with balance, vision, or speechWarmth, swelling, redness, or pain, in either legHeavy feeling, chest pain, pain that spreads to the shoulders or arms, general sick feeling, sweatingVery high blood pressurePuffiness around the eyes, swelling in the stomach, legs, or armsQuick weight gain, less urine outputFoamy urineLoss of bowel or bladder control, burning or pain during urinationContinuous vaginal discharge, and itchingSkipped menstrual periodsCommon side effects include:back painlack of appetitemild headachediarrheawatery or dry eyessymptoms of a coldflaky skin, hair losschanges in taste sensesgum infection, jaw pain, numbness, swelling, loose teethBEFORE TAKING AVASTIN:Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you have allergies to it, or if you currently have any of the following:Blood pressure that is uncontrolled or untreatedUncontrolled or severe bleedingOpen wounds in the skinIf you were recently coughing out bloodIf you had surgery in the last 4 weeks or are planning to have surgery in the coming 4 weeksIn order to take this medication safely, inform your doctor if you currently have any of the following medical conditions:A blood-clotting or bleeding disorderHistory of intestinal or stomach bleedingTear or hole in the esophagus, intestines, or stomachCongestive heart failure or heart diseaseHigh BPHistory of blood clots, strokes, or heart attacksIt is unknown whether Avastin will harm your unborn child. Inform your doctor immediately if you are planning a pregnancy or are pregnant, while using Avastin. Avastin may cause the ovaries to stop operating functionally. The symptom of a malfunctioning ovary includes more than three missed menstrual cycles. This will affect your ability to conceive.Since it is unknown whether Avastin passes via breast milk, do not breast feed your baby while being treated with this medication.Older adults are more likely to experience more side effects when taking Avastin.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:A common overdose symptom is a severe headache. Seek emergency care or call a poison control line at 1-800-222-1222.PROPER STORAGE OF AVASTIN:This medication can only be administered from a clinic or hospital, and will therefore not be stored at home. Avastin is stored in a refrigerator.GENERAL INFORMATION:For additional information about this prescription medication, please consult your prescribing doctor, health care provider, or local pharmacist.
