It is prescribed in the treatment of relapsing forms of Multiple Sclerosis. This includes individuals who have experienced their initial symptoms of the illness and have confirmed it with an MRI.Avonex is not a cure for MS, but it will decrease the amount of flare-ups, and slow the onset of some physical disabilities which are characteristic of this illness. The mechanism of action of Avonex in MS is unknown.Multiple Sclerosis is a life-long illness, in which the myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibers is destroyed.It is yet to be determined if Avonex is suitable for children.WARNING:Depression, Suicide, and Psychotic DisordersPatients being treated with Avonex are at increased risk of experiencing symptoms of depression, psychosis, and suicidal ideation. If these symptoms persist, cessation of the medication is recommended.Hepatic InjuryHepatic injury, and hepatic failure are reported by patients taking this medication. Taking Avonex increases hepatic transaminases which may lead to hepatic injury. Anaphylaxis and Other Allergic-ReactionsIn rare cases, anaphylaxis has been reported. Other severe allergic reactions include skin rash, dyspnea, urticaria, and orolingual edema. Avonex should be discontinued in the event of an anaphylactic reaction. Congestive Heart FailurePatients who have congestive heart failure and who are also taking Avonex should be closely monitored. If symptoms worsen, it could lead to cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Decreased Peripheral Blood CountsLow peripheral blood-counts across all cellular lines were reported. Patients should be closely monitored. SeizuresThe occurrence of seizures in patients taking Avonex is rare, but likely. Autoimmune DisordersPost marketing reports of patients who took Avonex indicate the occurrence of autoimmune disorders such as hypothyroidism, thrombocytopenia, and hyperthyroidism. SIDE EFFECTS:Taking Avonex, may lead to serious responses. Inform your medical doctor immediately, if you experience any of the following:Problems related to behavioral health such as suicidal thoughts, hallucinations, and depressionBehavior or mood problems may arise such as irritability, nervousness, anxiety, depression, aggressive behavior, thoughts of self harm, and hallucinations.Problems with the liver, liver failure leading to deathSymptoms of liver problems include nausea, tiredness, pale stools, confusion, yellowing of the skin, lack of appetite, and bleeding.During the course of your treatment with Avonex, your doctor will conduct regular blood test to rule out these side effects.Serious allergic responsesThese include itching, trouble breathing, feeling faint, skin rashes, skin blisters, and swelling of the facial area.Heart problems, and heart failureAvonex does not have a direct effect on the cardio system. However, patients who have a medical history related to heart problems, may develop heart failure or heart muscle issues after taking Avonex. Speak to your doctor immediately if you experience low blood pressure, chest pain, abnormal or fast heart rate, and cariomyopathy.5. Blood ProblemsTaking Avonex may impact the bone marrow and lead to low white and red blood cell counts. If blood counts fall too low, you can acquire problems and infections such as bruising and bleeding.6. SeizuresSome patients develop seizures, including those who never had them before.7. InfectionsSome people are susceptible to getting infections. Symptoms of this include chills, pain, frequent urination, bloody diarrhea, fever, and coughing mucus.8. Thyroid ProblemsWhile taking Avonex, some people experience changes in thyroid function. Symptoms of this include skin changes, weight changes, problems with concentrating, and feeling hot or cold all the time.BEFORE TAKING AVONEX:Using Avonex is not recommended in patients who are allergic to human albumin or interferons.Some patients who use this medication may experience intense feelings of depression or feel suicidal. Stop this medication immediately if you experience symptoms of depression or suicidal ideation.If any of the following medical conditions applies to you, a dose adjustment or specialized test may be required:liver diseaseseizure disorders, epilepsyheart disease, chest pain, heart-rhythm disorderthyroid disorderhistory of suicidal behaviour or depressionThis medication is harmful to your unborn child, and may lead to a miscarriage. The use of interferon beta-1 is NOT RECOMMENDED during pregnancy. Inform your doctor immediately if you are expecting. It is unknown if interferon-beta 1can be passed through breast milk.Avonex powder is derived from human plasma, and may therefore contain infectious agents and viruses that can lead to disease.
