Betaseron helps to reduce the number of weakness episodes and may also slow down the progression of this multiple sclerosis.Betaseron is similar to the protein manufactured in the human body (interferon). It operates by affecting the body’s immune system. It is thought that by taking interferon, the body is able to fight of the negative effects caused by multiple sclerosis.WARNING HEPATIC INJURYCases of hepatic failure and severe hepatic injuries have been reported by patients who took Betaseron. This risk is especially high if this medication is taken in conjunction with hepatoxic drugs. Liver function tests must be regularly administered.ANAPYLAXIS AND OTHER REACTIONSAnaphylactic reactions have been rarely reported by patients who took Betaseron. Other allergic reactions include bronchospasms, skin rashes, urticaria, tongue edema, and dyspnea.Discontinue taking this medication if you experience an anaphylactic reaction.SUICIDE AND DEPRESSIONPatients who took Betaseron reported higher rates of depression, and sometimes suicide. Patients are advised to monitor any suicidal or depressive ideation to their doctors.CONGESTIVE HEART FAILUREPatients who already have a pre-existing condition of congestive heart failure must be closely monitored for worsening of their condition, when taking Betaseron.SIDE EFFECTSSeek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following signs of an allergic response: swelling of the tongue, throat, lips, and face, hives, and difficulty breathing.Stop taking this medication and phone your doctor immediately if you experience any of these serious side effects:Suicidal ideation, trouble sleeping, restlessness, anxiety, or depressed mood;Swelling, skin changes at injection site, bruising, and oozing;Chills, body aches, feeling too cold or hot, pounding heart rate, and weight changes;Stomach pain, lack of appetite, dark urine, nausea, jaundice;Flu symptoms, fever.Common side effects include:Headache;Muscle weakness or pain;Sleep problems;Stomach pain;Weakness;Skin rash;Swelling in the feet or hands;Irregular menses.BEFORE TAKING BETASERON Do not take Betaseron if you are allergic to human albumin or interferons.Some patients may experience suicidal ideation or develop depression. Stop taking Betaseron if you experience suicidal ideation or depression.If any of the following medical conditions are applicable to you, a special test and or dose adjustment may be required to take this medication safely:Thyroid disorder;Liver disease;Seizures or epilepsy;Blood-clotting or bleeding disorder;Anemia;History of suicidal behaviour or depression.Do not take this medication if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or are breast feeding.Since interferon beta-1b is sourced from human-plasma sources, it may contain infectious agents. Even though donated human-plasma is tested, screened and treated, there is still a slight risk of disease transmission.Discuss the risks and benefits of Betaseron with your doctor.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTEDThe symptoms of interferon beta-1b overdose are unknown. If you suspect an overdose, visit your hospital emergency room immediately. Residents in the United States should call the National Poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Residents in Canada should call their provincial poison control office.PROPER STORAGE OF BETASERONUnmixed Betaseron should be stored away from moisture and light, at room temperatures. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep Betaseron out of reach from children.If you do not use the mixed solution immediately, refrigerate it and use it within the next three hours. Do not put in the freezer. Properly discard unused portions of Betaseron, after the three hours is up.GENERAL INFORMATIONFor additional information about this prescription medication, please consult your prescribing doctor, health care provider, or local pharmacist.
