The main ingredient in this drug, glatiramer acetate, is made up of four amino acids (proteins) which work by stopping the immune system from damaging spinal cord and brain nerves. This helps to decrease the periods of relapse and may delay or prevent disability. Copaxone is an immunomodulator, and not a remedy for Multiple Sclerosis.  Glatiramer may sometimes be prescribed for purposes which are not listed in this patient information sheet.WARNING:Some patients experience the following after receiving the injection:Post-injection reactionImmediately after receiving the injection, some patients experience flushing, palpitations, dyspnea, uritcaria, throat constriction, anxiety, and chest pain.Chest painSome patients report one or more instances of chest pain.Skin Necrosis and LipoatrophyThis is known to occur at injections sites. Patients are advised to follow proper injection procedures, and to routinely rotate injection sites.Immune ResponseSince Copaxone is administered to minimize or alter the immune system’s response to myelin, chronic treatment may result in alterations of cellular immunity.SIDE EFFECTS:The following severe reactions have been reported by patients who received the Copaxone injection:Warm, itchy, or tingly sensationFeeling anxiousRacing heartbeatDifficulty breathing while administering the injectionTightness in the throatThese reactions may occur months after using Copaxone.Seek emergency medical attention if you experience the following sings which indicate an allergic response:Swelling in the throat, tongue, lips, or faceDifficulty with breathinghivesSpeak to your prescribing doctor immediately if you experience the following side effects:chest painrapid heart ratebody aches, flu-like symptoms, fevers, and chillssevere pain at the injection siteCommon side effects include:irritation, swelling, redness or minor pain at the injection siteredness, tingly sensation, or warmth underneath the skindizziness or weaknessappearance of sores or white patches inside the mouth or on the lipsjoin paindiarrhea or nauseastiffness or tension of the musclesrunny noseincreased desire to urinatechanges in menstrual periods BEFORE TAKING COPAXONE:Before starting this medication, inform your doctor if you have allergies to mannitol or glatiramer. Do not take this drug if you have allergies to mannitol or glatiramer.Before beginning this medication, inform your doctor about any allergies you may have to other drugs, other medicines you might be taking, or other illnesses.According to the FDA, this medication is not harmful to your unborn child. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, or planning on becoming pregnant. It is unknown if Copaxone will pass through breast milk or if it is harmful to a nursing infant.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:In case of overdose, seek immediate emergency medical attention. Currently, the symptoms of overdose from this medication are unknown. Residents in the United States may contact the US National Poison Control Office.PROPER STORAGE OF COPAXONE:Copaxone syringes should be stored in their original cartons between 36 to 46 degrees F. This medication should not be freezed. Frozen syringes should not be used. This medication can be stored at room temperature, 59 to 86 degrees F, for up to 30 days. Keep this medication away from high temperatures and light.
