It is used in the treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, plaque psoriasis, and polyarticular-juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Enbrel may help to reduce the occurrence of joint damage, as well as symptoms and signs of these diseases.Enbrel may be used in conjunction with methotrexate, prescription steroids, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.Even though Enbrel works to reduce or block the overall effect of excessive TNF, it can also reduce the immune system’s ability to ward off infections.WARNING:People who are taking Enbrel have an increased risk of acquiring serious infections that affect their organ systems. This may lead to them being hospitalized or dying.Since taking Enbrel reduces the effectiveness of a person’s immune system, they become more susceptible to opportunistic infections such as viruses, parasites, mycobacteria, and fungi.  Many of these individuals may become infected by opportunistic pathogens such as blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, listeriosis, and tuberculosis.Patients who presently have an infection, should not start this medication. Patients taking immunosuppressant medications such as methotrexate and corticosteroids have a higher risk of becoming infected.Patients with the following conditions should assess the advantages and disadvantages of taking Enbrel, before starting therapy:Chronic or recurrent infectionExposure to tuberculosisHistory of infectionTraveled to or resided in areas that have endemic mycoses or endemic tuberculosisPoorly controlled or advanced diabetes   Patients who are taking Enbrel or who have completed their treatment using Enbrel, should be closely monitored for symptoms and signs of infection. Discontinue the use of Enbrel if sepsis or serious infections develop.In adolescents and children, lymphoma and other types of malignancies are known to occur.SIDE EFFECTS:Taking Enbrel may cause the following serious side effects:Previously infected with Hepatitis BIf you were previously infected with this virus, it reactivate while taking Enbrel.Nervous system issuesTaking a TNF blocker may make you more susceptible to developing diseases of the nervous system such as seizures, eye nerve inflammation, and multiple sclerosis.Blood ProblemsTNF blocker drugs reduce blood counts, which will compromise your immune system and how it fights of infections.Heart FailureThe worsening of present heart failure and the development of new heart failure is possible by taking TNF blockers such as Enbrel.PsoriasisTaking Enbrel may aggravate your psoriasis or lead to the development of psoriasis.Allergic ReactionsIf you develop symptoms of a allergies such as difficulty breathing, swollen face, or an intense rash, telephone your prescribing doctor immediately. Autoimmune ReactionsLupus-like syndrome which includes the development of rashes on the arms and face, may occur while taking Enbrel.Autoimmune Hepatitis leading to liver problems may occur in people taking TNF blocker medications.The following side effects are commonly reported while taking Enbrel:Reactions at the injection site such as itching, pain, redness, and swellingSinus infectionsHeadachesIf any of the above mentioned side effects do not go away or are bothersome, speak to your doctor immediately. BEFORE TAKING ENBRIL:Before beginning this medication, inform your doctor if you were ever infected with tuberculosis, if you reside with someone who has the disease, or if you have visited a place where tuberculosis is common.To ensure that you can benefit from this medication, inform your doctor if you currently have any of these conditions:Skin infection, compromised immune system, or open soresCongestive heart failureNerve disorders i.e. myelitis, optic neuritis, or multiple sclerosisSeizure disorders such as epilepsyBreathing disorders such as asthmaWere previously infected with Hepatitis BLatex rubber allergiesRecently vaccinated with Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccination or scheduled to receive a vaccineTaking etanercept during pregnancy is deemed to be safe by the FDA. Inform your doctor if you are expecting, or are planning on becoming pregnant during your treatment. It is unknown whether this medication will pass through breast milk or if it may harm a nursing infant. Inform your doctor if you are nursing your baby, BEFORE starting this medication.Children who take this medication should first be current on all of their immunizations.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:If an overdose is suspected, contact your local emergency room or poison control office immediately.
