Patients taking certain medications or those who have kidney-failure, have low amounts of this protein. When there are a few red blood cells, it can lead to anemia. This medication is sometimes called a erythropoiesis-stimulating agent, because it stimulates the production of red blood cells.Epoetin alfa is also used in the treatment of anemia. This drug may also be used as a treatment option for purposes which are not indicated in this summary.WARNING:Chronic Kidney DiseaseSome patients were at a greater risk of death, stroke, and other serious cardiovascular reactions, when they received ESAs to pump haemoglobin levels to more than 11g/dL.To date, no clinical trial studies have found an ideal haemoglobin-target level, dosing strategy, or ESA dose that minimizes these risks. It is recommended that the lowest dose of Epogen be prescribed in order to lessen the need for RBC transfusions.Taking ESAs generally reduced the survival or augmented the chances of tumour progression and recurrence in studies of individuals with head, neck, lymphoid, breast, and cervical cancers.Due to these risks, hospitals and prescribing doctors are required to comply and enrol in the ESA APPRISE Oncology Program, in order to prescribe and dispense Epogen to individuals with cancer.  To become enrolled in the ESA-APPRISE Oncology Program, visit ww.esa-apprise.com or telephone 1-866-284-8089 for further directions. To reduce these risks and to lessen the risk of developing serious thromboembolic and cardiovascular reactions, utilize the lowest possible dose in order to avoid the need for RBC transfusions.ESAs should only be used for anemia resulting from myelosuppressive chemotherapy.ESAs should not be used for patients who are receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy, when the expected outcome is a cure.Discontinue with this medication after the chemotherapy course has been completed. There is an increased risk of developing Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT). In this case, DVT prophylaxis would be recommended.CancerPerisurgery:SIDE EFFECTS:Seek immediate medical attention, if you experience any of the following symptoms or signs which indicate an allergic response, after taking Epogen:Difficulty breathingSwelling of the throat, face, neck, tongue, and lipsHivesSpeak to your doctor immediately if you:Feel lightheadedExperience shortness of breathSkin appears paleAll these symptoms might indicate that your body’s responsiveness to the medication has ended.Talomg Epoetin alfa increases your chances of acquiring life-threatening circulation or heart problems such as stroke and heart attack.
