It interferes with how cancer cells grow. It works by slowing down the growth rate of cells or it stops the growth entirely.Imatinib is used in the treatment of certain types of blood cancer (leukemia), such as chromosome-positive-chronic-myeloid leukemia (CML). Tumors of the digestive and stomach systems are also treated using this medication.WARNING:Fluid Retention and EdemaPatients who took Gleevec occasionally experienced fluid retention and edema. Patients should be monitored and weighed on a regular basis for symptoms and signs of fluid retention. Unexpected and quick weight gains should also be thoroughly investigated.Hematologic ToxicityTaking Gleevec may result in neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and anemia. It is recommended that patients undergo blood counts on a regular basis.Severe Congestive Heart Failure / Left Ventricular DysfunctionPatients taking Gleevec are more susceptible to left-ventricular dysfunction and congestive heart failure. Many of these patients had risk factors and comorbities such as history various heart ailments, and advanced age.HepatotoxicitySevere cases of hepatoxicity has been known to occur while taking Gleevec. Severe liver injuries and fatal liver-failure have both been reported with both long-term and short-term use. Liver function must be monitored before the onset of treatment, and on a regular basis.When chemotherapy is combined with Gleevec, tranaminase levels increase in the liver, leading to toxicity. Acute liver-failure has also been reported.Gastrointestinal DisordersThis medication should be taken with water and food, to minimize irritation of the gastrointestinal tract. In rare cases, perforation of the gastrointestinal tract has been reported.HypothyroidismPatients who have undergone thyroidectomy and underwent levothyroxine –replacement while being treated with Gleevec, experienced hypothyroidism. Monitoring of TSH levels is recommended.Pregnancy Category DThis medication can harm a fetus, if administered to an expectant mother. Imatinib mesylate has teratogenic effects.Children and AdolescentsAdolescents and children who took Gleevec experienced growth retardation. Long term effects on growth is unknown.Driving and Using MachineryPatients receiving Gleevec treatment, have been involved in motor-vehicle accidents. Some of the undesirable responses from taking Gleevec, such as blurry vision, somnolence, and dizziness might be responsible.SIDE EFFECTS:If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms, they indicate an allergic response. Seek emergency medical assistance immediately if you experience:Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, throat, lips, and tongue, hivesSpeak to your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following adverse side effects:Flu symptoms, chills, body aches, and feverUnusual bleeding, red or purple pinpoint spots under the skin, easy bruisingQuick weight gain, shortness of breath after mild exertion, swellingTarry or black stoolsPain in upper stomach, lack of appetite, jaundice, nausea, itching, clay-colored stoolVomiting or coughing up bloodBlood in the urine, pain in lower backUrination frequency decreasesTingly feeling or numbness around the mouthOveractive reflexes, tightness, muscle weakness, contractionWeak pulse, confusion, fainting, slow or fast heart rateSevere reactions of the skin, burning in the eyes, sore throatCommon side effects include:Vomiting, diarrhea, mild nausea, and stomach painMuscle crampsMuscle or joint painFeeling tired, head acheSinus pain, stuffy noseThis is not an exhaustive list of side effect that may occur. The use of birth control methods is highly recommended. If you do become pregnant while taking this medication, inform your doctor immediately. It is unknown whether imatinib will pass through breast milk, or if it might harm a baby.This medication affects a child’s growth rate. Speak to your doctor if your child is not growing at the expected rate, while taking this medication.Children under the age of 2 should receive this medication without medical supervision.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:Symptoms of an overdose include dark urine, abdominal swelling, and very severe cramps in the muscles.If you suspect overdose has occurred, contact the local poison control office or hospital emergency room.
