It may be in combination with other medications to treat specific forms of breast-cancer. Trastuzumab is the active ingredient in Herceptin, and it is used in the treatment of breast cancer that has moved further after being treated with chemotherapy.Trastuzumab interferes with how cancer cells grow. The medication attaches to cancer cells and stops them from expanding and growing. Trastuzumab may activate the immune system to annihilate the cells or it may destroy the cancer itself.Primarily used to treat specific forms of breast cancer, it may also be used for some forms of stomach cancer.This medication may be used in treating other medical conditions which are not mentioned in this summary.WARNING:Patients are advised to call their doctor immediately if the following occurs:Shortness of breath worsens or a new onset beginsSwelling of ankles and legsPalpitationsGaining over 5 pounds in weight in 24 hoursLosing consciousness or dizzyWomen in their childbearing years or those who are pregnant are warned of the potential fetal harm that may result from taking this medication. Women are advised to use contraceptive methods while the treatment is going on, and for six months afterwards. Women who are breast feeding, are advised to discontinue.The following medical conditions have been observed in patients who took Herceptin.CardiomyopathyPatients taking Herceptin concomitantly with anthracycline-containing chemotherapy medication, were at a higher risk for cardiac failure.Infusion Reactions and Pulmonary ToxicityTaking Herceptin may result in fatal or serious pulmonary toxicity and infusion reactions. These symptoms occur within 24 hours of starting Herceptin.This medication should not be administered to patients who have angioedema, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and interstitial pneumonitis.Embryo-Fetal ToxicityHerceptin exposure during pregnancy may cause oligohydramnios sequence and result in pulmonary hypoplasia, neonatal death, and skeletal abnormalities.SIDE EFFECTS:Some people who took the Herceptin injection, reported having a reaction at the infusion site. Inform your caregiver immediately if you experience shortness of breath during the infusion, weak, nauseated, dizzy, light-headed, or itchy.Seek emergency medical assistance immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic response:Hives, shortness of breath, swelling of the face, neck, mouth, throat, and tongueThe following is a list of serious side effects. Call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following:pain that spreads to the shoulder and arm, nausea, heavy feeling, chest painpounding or fast heartbeatshortness of breath even during mild exertionquick weight gain, swellingwheezing or coughingchills, flu symptoms, body aches, and feversores or white patches inside mouth and on lipsCommon side effects include:diarrhea, nausea, vomitingsinus pain, sore throatback pain, muscle or joint paintired feelingheadacheThis is not an exhaustive list of all the side effects that may occur. Speak to your doctor for information regarding side effects. BEFORE TAKING HERCEPTIN:Before taking this medication, inform your doctor immediately if you have an allergy to any medications, or have:Congestive heart failureHeart diseaseHistory of allergies, breathing problems, or heart attackWith the presence any one of these medical conditions, trastuzumab might not be the right medication for you, or you may require a dosage adjustment.This medication may harm your unborn child. Refrain from using this medication if you are planning a pregnancy or are pregnant. Since it is unknown if trastuzumab is carried through breast milk, it might harm a child who is nursing.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:Symptoms of an overdose on trastuzumab are not known. If you suspect an overdose, visit an emergency room or contact your poison control center. Residents in the US should call 1-800-222-1222. Residents in Canada may call their provincial-poison-control center.PROPER STORAGE OF HERCEPTIN:This medication is administered at a clinic and therefore not stored at home.GENERAL INFORMATION:For additional information about this prescription medication, please consult your prescribing doctor, health care provider, or local pharmacist.
