It is made using recombinant-DNA technology or rDNA and differs chemically from insulin that is made in a person’s body. Lantus is an insulin-analog. This medication treats diabetes and controls increased blood sugar levels. It is administered once per day to reduce blood sugar levels.Lantus is a clear, sterile solution that injected underneath the skin.WARNING:Dosage monitoring and adjustmentPatients who are receiving insulin, must have a glucose monitoring regimen in place. Changes to your regimen should be made with medical guidance.Adjustments to insulin strength, type, administration method, and manufacturer, might result in a change in the insulin dose or changes to associated oral antidiabetic treatment.The time required for Lantis to be effective varies across individuals. This can be affected by conditions such as temperature, physical activity, and blood supply.AdministrationThis medication should not be administered intravenously or via a pump. Lantus is meant to be injected subcutaneously. Intravenous administration of Lantus may result in hypoglycemia.Do not mix or dilute Lantus with other solutions or insulin. A mixed solution will have an altered pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic profile.Avoid sharing reusable or disposable insulin devices and needles with others, as it carries the risk of transmitting blood-borne pathogens.HypoglycemiaThis is a very common reaction to insulin. Individual patients should be taught to manage and recognize symptoms of hypoglycemia. Severe cases may lead to convulsions, unconsciousness, and even death.Allergic and hypersensitivity reactions Some life-threatening reactions have been observed such as anaphylaxis, may occur with the use of Lantus.Renal impairmentSince Lantus takes time act, it is not recommended in the treatment of quickly declining renal-function, due to the risk of prolonged hypoglycemia.Hepatic impairmentLantus should not be used during declining hepatic-function due to the risk of prolonged hypoglycemia.Refrain from using this medication if you have low blood glucose levels.During periods of very high or very low blood glucose levels, you might experience dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision.Alcohol should be limited during the course of this medication, as it can lead to the development of low blood-glucose levels.During certain times such as fever, injury, surgery, and infection, it might become difficult to control your blood glucose levels.Changes in activity level or lifestyle affects the insulin amount required by your body to control blood glucose levels.Blood glucose levels should be monitored regularly, particularly if you exercise. It is advisable that patients carry glucose tablets or hard candy if they have hypoglycemia. Inform your doctor immediately if redness, swelling, thickening skin, or itching occurs at the insulin-injection site.BEFORE TAKING LANTUS:This medication should not be used if you have an allergy to Lantus.To ensure that Lantus is an appropriate medication for you, inform your doctor immediately if kidney or liver disease is present.It is unknown if Lantus might be safe for an unborn child. Inform your doctor if you are planning on getting pregnant, or are pregnant during the course of the treatment.It is unknown if Lantus will pass through breast milk or if it may harm a nursing infant. Refrain from using this medication if you want to breast feed your baby.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:If you suspect an overdose, visit an emergency room or contact your poison control center. Residents in the US should call 1-800-222-1222.PROPER STORAGE OF LANTUS:All unopened insulin packages should be stored in the fridge between 36 to 46 degrees F or 2 to 8 degrees Celsius.Insulin should not be frozen.If using vials, store them in the fridge, away from direct light and heat.Pens and cartridges that are currently being used should not be refrigerated.All containers that are in use, should be discarded after twenty eight days. Insulin products that are expired should be discarded.Lantus should not be stored in the bathroom.Keep this and all medications out of reach from pets and children.For additional information about this prescription medication, please consult your prescribing doctor, health care provider, or local pharmacist.
