It is applied topically to block nerve signals which communicate pain to the body. Lidoderm may be used to reduce discomfort or pain caused by sunburns, poison ivy, insect bites, poison sumac, scratches, burns, hemorrhoids, and poison oak. Lidoderm is also used to relieve the nerve pain associated with shingles.It is a patch of lidocaine in 5% strength. When applied to the skin, it creates a temporary loss in feeling to the area.WARNING:Accidental Exposure Children and pets may suffer serious effects if they ingest or chew used or new Lidoderm patches.GeneralHepatic Disease:Patients with hepatic disease may develop toxic blood concentration levels of lidocaine, because they are unable to properly metabolize lidocaine.Allergic Reactions:Patients who have drug sensitivities should use Lidoderm with caution.Non-intact Skin:When Lidoderm is applied to inflamed or broken skin, it may increase blood concentration levels of lidocaine.External Heat Sources:External sources of heat such as electric blankets and heating pads should not be placed over the Lidoderm patch as this may elevate blood plasma levels of lidocaine.Eye Exposure:Avoid exposing Lidoderm to the eye, as it may result in severe eye-related reactions. If contact with the eyes occur, flush with saline water.SIDE EFFECTS:Application-Site ReactionsAfter or during treatment with the Lidoderm patch, your skin might develop a burning sensation, blisters, dermatitis, edema, exfoliation, pruritus, petechia, and vesicles. These reactions are transient and mild, and resolve within a few hours.Allergic ReactionsAnaphylactic and allergic reactions are rare but may occur. These present themselves as dermatitis, hypersensitivity, dyspnea, angioedema, laryngospasm, shock, urticaria, and pruritus.Other Adverse ReactionsDizziness, hpoesthesia, lightheadedness, somnolence, tinnitus, tremor, and vomiting have been reported.Dosage-related ReactionsDrowsiness, blurry vision, vomiting, respiratory depression, drowsiness, tremors, and heat sensations may occur. Cardiovascular reactions may include hypotension, bradycardia, and collapse, which may lead to arrest. Swelling, redness, skin color changes, and blisters, may occur at the application site. Inform your doctor if you are planning a pregnancy or are pregnant.Lidoderm is a topical and therefore may pass through breast milk, and cause harm to your nursing baby. Refrain from using this medication while you are breast feeding.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:An overdose is likely to occur when using numbing medications without medical supervision. Symptoms of overdose include seizure, slowed breathing, uneven heartbeats, and respiratory failure.If overdose has occurred, the patch should be removed immediately. This medication is harmful if swallowed. If you suspect an overdose, visit an emergency room or contact your poison control center. Residents in the US should call 1-800-222-1222. Residents of Canada should call their provincial poison control center.PROPER STORAGE OF LIDODERM:Store this medication at 77 degrees F or room temperature. Store away from moisture and light. Do not keep this medication in a bathroom. The patch should be kept sealed in its original envelope.
