This medication works to reduce the levels of LDL (low density lipoprotein) or “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood. At the same time, it increases the level of HDL (high density lipoprotein) or “good” cholesterol.Lipitor may also reduce your risk of stroke, heart attacks, chest pain, and specific heart surgeries in patients with heart disease or have risk factors for heart disease such as:Age, high blood pressure, family history of heart disease, and smokingLipitor can also reduce the risk for stroke and heart attack in diabetics with risk factors such as:Kidney problems, high blood pressure, smoking, and eye problemsAtorvastatin is prescribed for children, aged 10 and up, and adults.Lipitor will begin to work after two weeks.This medication may also be prescribed for reasons not indicated in this summary.WARNING:In some cases, taking Lipitor may lead to the following serious side effects:Skeletal MuscleTaking Lipitor can lead to serious problems in the muscles. These can lead to kidney problems which will end in kidney failure. The chances of acquiring muscle problems are higher individuals taking certain medications in conjunction with Lipitor.Liver ProblemsBlood test to check liver function, must be regularly conducted, before starting Lipitor and after. If you experience the following signs and symptoms, it could indicate liver problems:Feel weak or tiredLack of appetitePain in the upper bellyDark and amber colored urineYellowing of whites in the eyes and skinSeek immediate medical attention if the following symptoms arise:Problems in the muscles such as pain for no reason, tenderness, weakness, feeling exhausted more than usual, and fever. These may be early warning signs of a muscle problem.If problems in the muscles persist, even after you have stopped taking Lipitor. Tests may be required to diagnose the nature of the muscle problem.Allergic reactions such as swelling in the lips, tongue, throat, and face, require immediate emergency medical attention.Vomiting and nauseaDark colored or brown urineFeeling tired more oftenPain in the stomachSIDE EFFECTS:Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following signs and symptoms which point to an allergic response:Hives, swelling of the mouth, throat, tongue, lips, and face, difficulty breathingStop taking this medication and phone your doctor immediately if any of the following adverse side effects occur:Muscular pain that is unexplainable, weakness, tendernessDark colored urine, fever, tirednessWeight gain, urine output has lessened, swellingNausea, itching, lack of appetite, jaundice, clay-colored stoolCommon side effects include:Mild muscular painDiarrhea orMild nauseaThis is not an exhaustive list of responses to Lipitor. Do not take this medication if you are breast feeding, are pregnant, or have liver-disease.To ensure that you receive the beneficial effects of Atorvastatin, inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:History of kidney disease, or liver diseaseMuscular weakness or painDiabetesDisorder of the thyroidIf you consume over two alcoholic beverages on a regular basis.In very rare situations, this medication may lead to a condition which results in the breakdown of skeletal-muscle tissue, eventually ending in kidney failure. The chances of this happening are higher in older adults and in those people with kidney disease or poorly-controlled hypothyroidism.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:If you suspect an overdose, visit an emergency room or contact your poison control center. Residents in the US should call 1-800-222-1222.PROPER STORAGE OF LIPITOR:This medication should be stored at 68 to 77°F or 20 to 25°C, room temperature.Medicine that is outdated or not used, should be disposed in a proper manner.Keep this medication and all other out of reach from children and pets.For additional information about this prescription medication, please consult your prescribing doctor, health care provider, or local pharmacist.
