It prevents abnormal blood cell formation beneath the retina. Some people have a specific eye disease where abnormal blood vessels will grow and leak fluid and blood from under the retina. This is a “wet” version of macular degeneration.Ranibizumab is prescribed for the treatment of age-related macular-degeneration. It will help in preventing blindness and decreased vision.This medication may also be prescribed for purposes that are not listed in this summary.WARNING:Endophthalmitis & Retinal DetachmentsPatients who received intravitreal injections of Ranibizumab, are more likely to experience retinal detachments and edopthalmitis. Utliizing aseptic injection procedures should always be used to prevent this from occurringIncreases In Intraocular PressurePatients who were treated with Lucentis, noted experiencing pressure at both the pre-injection site and post-injection site, sixty minutes at a 60-minute interval. Intraocular pressure should be monitored and followed up with an intravitreal injection of Lucentis.Thromboembolic EventsIn clinical trials, a minimized risk of ATEs or arterial thromboembolic events were observed. The risk of acquiring an ATE persists after the intravitreal utilization of VEGF inhibitors.SIDE EFFECTS:Seek immediate medical assistance if you experience any of the following symptoms and signs of an allergy:Difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, and face,  hivesIf you experience any of the following serious side effects, speak to your doctor immediately:Changes in visionIrritation, pain in the eye, and rednessBleeding or discharge from the eyesEye sensitivity to outside lightSwelling around the eyeSeeing flashes or “stars”, particularly in the peripheral visionBurning or pain during urinationWeakness or numbness, on one half of the bodyConfusion, sudden headache, problems with balance, vision, or speechCommon side effects include:Watery or itchy eyesBlurred visionDry eyesMuscle or joint painStuffy or runny nose, sore throat, coughThis is not an exhaustive list of all the side effects. Speak to your doctor about the side effects that are bothersome or unusual.BEFORE TAKING LUCENTIS:This medication should not be consumed by individuals with an allergy to ranbizumab, or if there is an infection near the eye.Before starting this medication, inform your doctor if you have family history of stroke or blood clots, or glaucoma.This is a category C medication, which means this drug is harmful to your unborn child. Inform you doctor immediately if you are planning to get pregnant or are pregnant. It is unclear if Ranibizumab can pass through breast milk.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:This medication can cause serious harm if swallowed. If overdose or swallowing is suspected, immediately call your local poison-control office or emergency room. Residents in the US may call the US Poison Hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents may call their provincial poison control office.PROPER STORAGE OF LUCENTIS:This medication must be in its original packaging, in the refridgerator, at temperatures between 36-46 degrees F or 2-8 degrees C. Keep away from moisture and light.
