It belongs to the colony-stimulating factors family of drugs. Pegfilgrastim is prescribed to encourage the marrow in the bone to manufacture neutrophils (white blood cell), in patients who are unable to produce neutrophils by themselves.Neutrophils combat body infections. Medical conditions such as cancer and chemotherapy affect the body’s ability to general white-blood cells.WARNING:The following medical conditions have been reported in patients who have taken Neulasta. As a result, this medication should only be taken under a doctor’s evaluation, after examining the benefits of this drug.Splenic rupture has been reported in patients who were administered Neulasta. Patients should be evaluated for splenic rupture or for a spleen that has enlarged.ARDS or acute respiratory distress syndrome can occur in patients who are taking Neulasta. Patients should be evaluated for lung infiltrates, respiratory distress, or fever after starting a course of Neulasta. This medication should be discontinued if ARDS has developed.Severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis are possible in patients taking Neulasta. This reaction can recur after the anti-allergic treatment has been discontinued. In this case, Neulasta should not be administered.Patients who have sickle cell anemia may experience crises after starting Neulasta. Sometimes fatal sickle-cell crises may occur.SIDE EFFECTS:Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction:Swelling of the lips, throat, face, or tongueDifficulty breathingHivesIf you experience any of the following severe side effects, seek medical attention:Severe or sudden pain in the upper left area of the stomach, which spreads to the shoulderSever skin rashes, flushing, and dizzinessShortness of breath or rapid breathingSigns of possible infection which include sore throat, fever, flu symptoms, easy bleeding or bruising, lack of appetite, vomiting, unusual weakness, mouth sores, and chillsRedness, pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection siteCommon side effects include:Pain in the legs or armsSwelling, redness, or hard lump at  the injection siteBEFORE TAKING NEULASTA:Before starting this medication inform your doctor if you have allergies to filgrastim or pegfilgrastim. In order to ensure that you get the beneficial effects of Neulasta, inform your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions: Latex allergiesPreleukemiaChronic myeloid-leukemiaSickle cell anemiaIt is unknown whether pegfilgrastim is harmful to an unborn child. If you are expecting, or planning on becoming pregnant, inform your doctor.FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether pegfilgrastim will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication.It is unknown whether pegfilgrastim can pass through breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, inform your doctor before taking this medication.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:If you suspect an overdose, visit an emergency room or contact your poison control center. Residents in the US should call 1-800-222-1222. Residents in Canada should directly call their poison control office.PROPER STORAGE OF NEULASTA:This medication should be kept refrigerated between 36 to 46 degrees F or 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. Do not freeze, and keep away from direct light. If it is frozen, thaw it in the fridge, before using. Safely discard the syringe if it has been frozen once already. Safely store this medication away from reach of pets and children.Neulasta may be kept unrefrigerated for 48 to 72 hours. If the medication remains unused, then discard it. This medication should not be flushed or poured down the drain, unless instructed to do so by your pharmacist or health care provider.GENERAL INFORMATION:For additional information about this prescription medication, please consult your prescribing doctor, health care provider, or local pharmacist.
