It is used in the treatment of prolonged medium to acute pain. Oxycodone is similar to morphine, in that it is a narcotic analgesic that relieves pain. It works to change how the brain reacts to the body as it experiences and responds to pain.This is an extended-release version of Oxycodone which is used for continuous management of pain. Oxycodone should not be prescribed for managing post surgical pain, unless the patient was taking Oxycodone prior to the surgery.  This medication should not be taken to relieve mild pain that would subside within a few days, nor can it be used occasionally.WARNING:Abuse PotentialSince Oxycodone may become habit-forming, it should only be taken by the person for whom it is prescribed. This medication should be stored in a secure location.Do not consume alcohol while on Oxycodone. Severe side effects and even death may occur when a narcotic pain-killer and alcohol are combined. This medication may also impair your ability to be alert.Oxycodone should not be abruptly stopped; otherwise you will experience a series of negative withdrawal symptoms.Respiratory DepressionFatal cases of respiratory depression have been known to occur, particularly when OxyContin is initiated or when the dosage is increased. Patients should swallow each tablet intact. Do not crush, chew, or dissolve the tablet, because it will lead to a rapid release and then absorption of a fatal dose of the medication.Accidental ExposureAccidental ingestion of this medication is quite possible, especially by children. It can lead to a fatal overdose and possibly death. There are medications which should not be taken with OxyContin. If you experience shallow or unusually slow breathing, seek emergency medical attention immediately. The higher the dosage of this medication, the higher the likelihood of it turning into an addiction, particularly if it higher than 40 mg per tablet. Taking this medication at higher doses makes people vulnerable to over dosage and possibly death.SIDE EFFECTS:Seek emergency medical assistance if you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic response:HivesSwelling in the tongue, throat, face, and lipsDifficulty with breathingIf you experience the following side effects, stop using this medication and seek immediate medical attention.Slow heartbeat and shallow breathingConvulsionsClammy and cold skinDizziness or weaknessFeeling as if you might faintCommon side effects include:Vomiting, lack of appetite, nausea, and constipationHeadache, tiredness, and dizzinessDry mouthItchingSweatingBEFORE TAKING OXYCONTIN:This medication should not be used if you have experienced an allergic response to narcotic medicines such as morphine, methadone, and Percocet, or to narcotic cough medicines.Avoid taking OxyContin if you are experiencing an asthma episode, or if you suffer from a bowel obstruction disorder.Regular use of Oxycodone may be habit-forming and should only be taken by the person whose name appears on the prescription sheet. This medication should never be shared, especially with an individual who has a history of addiction.In order to safely take this medication, inform your doctor if you currently have any of the following medical conditions:COPD, breathing disorders, asthmaKidney or liver diseaseUnderactive thyroidBrain tumourSeizure or epilepsyGall bladder diseaseLow blood pressureUrination problemsMental illnessEnlarged prostate The FDA deems that Oxycodone will not cause harm to an unborn child. It can however be passed through breast milk and harm the infant. Breast feeding is forbidden while using this medication, as it can be passed through breast milk.Older adults are more susceptible to experiencing side effects while taking this medication.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:Symptoms of an overdose include slowed heart rate and breathing, and losing consciousness.  If you suspect an overdose, visit an emergency room or contact your poison control center. Residents in the US should call 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents may call their provincial poison authority.PROPER STORAGE OF OXYCONTIN:This medication should be stored at room temperature, ranging from 59 to 86 degrees F. Keep away from moisture and light.
