It is used in the treatment of relapsing types of multiple sclerosis.This medication will not cure MS, but will reduce the number of recurrences of the disease. It will also slow down the occurrence of some of the physical disabilities which are prevalent in people who have MS.MS is a life long illness that affects the nervous system by destroying the myelin coating around the nerve fibres.Rebif’s mechanism of action is unknown.WARNING:Suicide and DepressionPatients who use Rebif have reported feeling depressed, and experiencing suicidal ideation and attempts.Hepatic injuryIn some patients who used Rebif, severe liver injuries, including those leading to hepatic failure and complete liver transplantation were reported. If you experience jaundice, or any other symptoms related to liver failure while taking this medication, speak to your doctor immediately.AnaphylaxisIn rare cases, anaphylaxis has been reported with Rebif use. Other allergic responses such as urticaria, and skin rash have also been found.Albumin (Human)Regbif contain albumin that was derived from human blood. Even though donor screening and safe product manufacturing practices were in place, there is still a remote risk of transmitting viral diseases.SIDE EFFECTS:Flu-like symptoms. Sweating, chills, fever, and tiredness. These will eventually decrease or disappear.Skin reactions. Appearance of bruising, pain, soreness, and redness at the injection site.Depression and anxiety. May increase anxiety and depression in some patients.Liver problems. Liver function may decline. Symptoms such as yellowing of the whites in the eyes and skin, easy brusing, and changes in the liver, require immediate medical attention.Blood problems. You may experience a drop in infection-fighting cells, and the ability to form blood-clots.Thyroid problems: Symptoms include feeling hot or cold all the time, weight loss or gain without diet changes or exercise.Allergic reactions. The appearance of hives, rash , itching are common.Regardless of whether you experience side effects or not, your health should be continually monitored. You may be required to do periodic blood tests.Seek emergency medical assistance if you experience any signs or symptoms of an allergic response such as swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue, hives, and difficulty with breathing.Speak to your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:Anxiety, restlessness, depressed mood, suicidal ideation, and trouble sleepingBleeding or bruising easily, weaknessTingling or numbness in the feet and handsChills, flu symptoms, and feverBurning or pain during urinationJaundiceCommon side effects include:Dizziness, headacheStomach painStuffy or runny noseThis is not an exhaustive list of side effects that you might experience. Call your prescribing doctor about side effects that you experience which are not listed in this summary.BEFORE TAKING REBIF:If you are allergic to human albumin or interferons, do not use this medication.Some patients who use this medication, may have suicidal thoughts or feel very depressed. Stop using this medication if you have thoughts of self h arm or symptoms of depression.If you experience any of the following conditions, you may require a dosage adjustment or specialized testing:Liver diseaseSeizure disorders or epilepsyChest pain, congestive heart failure, heart diseaseThyroid disorderHistory of suicidal behaviour or depression This is an FDA-pregnancy-category C medication. Do not take this medication if you are expecting.  It is unknown if this medication will pass through breast milk, therefore women who take Rebif should not breast feed their infants.It is not known whether interferon beta-1a passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:If you suspect an overdose, visit an emergency room or contact your poison control center. Residents in the US should call 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their provincial poison control help line.PROPER STORAGE OF REBIF:Rebif is available in prefilled, syringes, with the needles attached, in pre-assembled, one-time use autoinjectors.Store this medication in the fridge at temperature between 36°F to 46°F or 2°C to 8°C.
