Certain disease of the bowels such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and certain skin diseases such as plaque psoriasis, are also treated using Remicade. In all these diseases, the body’s immune system attacks itself. Infliximab, the main ingredient in Remicade, blocks the action of a natural substance called tumor necrosis factor. The blocking action decreases inflammation and weakens the immune system, which slows or stops the damage caused by the disease.WARNING:Patients taking Remicade have an increased risk of acquiring serious infections which may cause hospitalization or result in death. Most people that were hospitalized or died were also taking immunosuppressants such as corticosteroids and methotrexate.Discontinue taking Remicade if your develop sepsis or other serious infections. Some types of reported infection include:Reactivation of TB that was latent or new TBFungal infections that invasiveViral and bacterial infections caused by opportunistic pathogens such as Listeria and LegionellaIndividuals who are taking Remicade or who have finished their course should be observed closely for signs of developing infection.In adolescents and children, lymphoma and similar malignancies have been reported with the use of TNF blockers. SIDE EFFECTS:Some individuals who receive the Remicade injection experience reactions afterwards. Inform your prescribing doctor if you feel nauseated, itchy, tingly, dizzy, chilly, or experience tightness in the throat. These reactions can occur up to two after the injection has been administered.Seek immediate medical assistance if you develop the following symptoms which indicate an allergic reaction:Swelling of the tongue, throat, lips, or faceHivesDifficulty breathingFever, tiredness, weight loss, and night sweatsPain that begins in the upper stomach and spreads to the shoulderPale skin, rapid heartbeat, bleeding, easily bruisesLack of appetite, clay-colored stool, jaundice, nauseaCall your prescribing doctor if you experience any of the following side effects”Flu symptoms, pain, redness of the skin, chills, fever, and confusion, are signs and symptoms of infectionPersistent cough, chest pain, coughing blood or mucusTingling, or numbnessShort of breath, swelling in the feet or ankles, quick weight gainWeakness in legs or armsVision problemsSeizure, neck stiffnessBurning or pain sensation during urinationJoint pain, mouth sores, scaly skinCommon side effects include:Headache, sinus pain, and stuffy noseSkin rashFlushingBEFORE TAKING REMICADE:Before starting this medication, inform your doctor if you have allergies to Infliximab, or if you were treated with abatacept (Orencia) or anakinra (Kineret).Since individuals have a higher risk of developing lymphomas, consult your doctor about your own risk. Inform your doctor, if you ever had TB, or if anyone you live with has TB, or if you recently traveled somewhere where TB is common.In order to safely take Remicade, notify your doctor if you have any of the following health conditions:Heart problems or heart failureSkin wounds, open sores, recent or active infectionDiabetesHepatitis BSeizures or epilepsyCOPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary diseaseCancer historyPoorly functioning immune systemTingling or numbness in the bodyDisease that affect muscles or nerves such as Guillain-Barre syndrome or multiple sclerosisRecently vaccinate for BCDScheduled to receive a vaccineIF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:If you suspect an overdose, visit an emergency room or contact your poison control center. Residents in the US should call 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents are advised to telephone their provincial poison control office. PROPER STORAGE OF REMICADE:Speak to your pharmacist or prescribing doctor about to properly store this medication.
