Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody that works by adhering itself to specific blood in the immune system (B Cells) and then killing them. Sometimes it is paired with radioactive drugs and monoclonal antibodies to fight certain cancers.Sometimes this medication is used along with methotrexate in treating severe cases of rheumatoid arthritis. It is only after other medications have failed to treat rheumatoid arthritis that rituximab should be used. This medication is also used to treat microscopic polyangiitis and Wegener’s granulomatosis. Rituximab will decrease swelling and joint pain.WARNING:The following serious medical conditions have been observed in individuals who take Rituxan:Infusion ReactionsTaking this medication can cause serious and fatal infusion-reactions. Deaths have occurred in the span of 24 hours of taking Rituxan infusion. Most of these deaths occurred with the first infusion.Mucocutaneous ReactionsSevere and even fatal reactions have occurred after receiving a Rituxan infusion.Reactivation of Hepatitis B-Virus (HBV)HBV reactivation has been known to occur with patients who were treated using Rituxan. In some of these cases, fulminant hepatitis, hepatic failure, and even death have occurred. All patients should be screened for HBV before starting treatment with Rituxan.Progressive Multifocal-Leukoencephalopathy (PML)Fatal PML has been observed in patients taking Rituxan.SIDE EFFECTS:Some individuals who take rituximab injections experience a reaction when the medication is administered intravenously. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience the following symptoms:NauseaWeakDizzyMuscular painFeverChillsDifficulty breathingPain in the shoulders or chestSore throatItchyLight headedThese reactions usually occur within 24 hours after beginning the rituximab injection.Seek emergency medical attention if any of the following symptoms occur, as these indicate an allergic reaction:Swelling of the face, tongue, lips, and or throatDifficulty breathingHivesThis medication can increase your chances of acquiring a viral infection which can affect your brain, causing disability and or death. Individuals with weakened immune systems or on certain medications are at a higher risk. Speak to your doctor immediately if you experience the following symptoms:Decreased visionChanges in mental stateProblems walking or speakingThese symptoms have a gradual onset but may quickly worsen.The following serious effects may occur after the treatment ends or several months have passed after receiving rituximab:Tingly feeling around the mouth, pain in lower back, blood in the urineLess urinationMuscle weakness or tightness, overactive reflexes or contractionRapid or slowed heart rate, difficulty breathing, or wheezingSudden weakness or numbness on a single side, dizziness, lack of balance, confusionPain in the chest, pain spreading from the shoulder or arm, sweatingBleeding or easy bruisingStomach pain or severe constipationBurning or pain during urinationTarry, bloody, or black stoolsEarache, skin sores, peeling rash, skin sores, and mouth ulcersLack of appetite, jaundice, pain in upper stomach, nauseaCommon side effects include:Nausea, diarrhea, stomach painSwelling in the feet and handsJoint or muscular painNight sweatsPain at the injection site BEFORE TAKING RITUXAN:Inform your prescribing doctor immediately if you are allergic to rituximab or to mouse proteins.In order to safely use this medication, inform your doctor if any of the following conditions is applicable to you:Hepatitis B, liver diseaseKidney diseaseSystemic Lupus-erythematosusBreathing disorder or lung diseaseWeakened immune systemAngina, heart disease history, heart-rhythm disorderActive or recent infections such as shingles, herpes, chickenpox, hepatitis C, West Nile virus, that keep returning and do not clear up.Since it is unknown about the effects of this drug on an  unborn child, inform your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, or planning a pregnancy. It is still unknown if rituximab can be passed through breast milk or if it can harm a breast-feeding infant.Older adults are more vulnerable to experiencing side effects from this medication, leading to heart rhythms and breathing problems. IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:If you suspect an overdose, visit an emergency room or contact your poison control center. Residents in the US should call 1-800-222-1222. Residents in Canada should contact their provincial poison control center.PROPER STORAGE OF RITUXAN:Speak to your prescribing doctor or pharmacist about how to safely store this medication.
