This is a non-steroidal medication which can help improve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and asthma.Singulair is a long term treatment option for asthma and for the prevention of asthma attacks in children older than 12 months and in adults. It also prevents exercise-induced asthma attacks in individuals six years and older. Singulair can help control symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis such as stuffy nose, itching nose, and sneezing. Singular is used in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis and perennial allergic-rhinitis.Singulair should not be used in the event that you experience an asthmatic attack.Montelukast inhibits chemicals which are released in the body when it comes into contact with allergens. When a person breathes in allergens, leukotrienes are released which cause swelling in the lungs and the muscles tighten around the airways, leading to asthma symptoms.WARNING:The following serious medical conditions have been observed in individuals who were taking Singulair:Acute AsthmaSingulair cannot be used to reverse bronchospasms associated with acute asthmatic attacks. Instead, relevant rescue medication should be used.Using Steroids with SingulairSingulair cannot be stopped abruptly or substituted for oral or inhaled corticosteroids.Aspirin Sensitivity If you have a sensitivity to aspirin, avoid taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication while taking Montelukast sodium.Neuropsychiatric EventsPediatric, adolescent, and adult patients who took Singulair, experienced aggressive behaviors, agitation, depression, attention disturbance, hallucinations, memory impairment, somnambulism, and suicidal behavior and thinking.Eosinophilic ConditionsPatients who are using Singulair to treat their asthma, may develop systemic eosinophilia, sometimes displaying certain features of vasculitis, that resembles Churg-Strauss syndrome. This condition is usually trated with complete corticosteroid therapy. Reducing the intake of oral-corticosteroid therapy may lead to these events. The development of neuropathy, cardiac complications, or pulmonary symptoms that are worsening, should be brought to the attention of the prescribing doctor.PhenylketonuriaPatients with phenylketonuria should be aware that the chewable tablets in 4 and 5 mg, contain the ingredient phenylalanine (found in aspartame).SIDE EFFECTS:Seek emergency medical assistance immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms which indicate an allergic reaction:HivesSwelling of lips, tongue, throat, and faceDifficulty with breathingTelephone your doctor immediately if any of the following serious concerns arise:Bruising, numbness, muscular weakness, pain, or skin rashBehavior or mood changes, depression, preoccupied with thoughts of self-harming or suicideShaking or tremorsUnusual bleeding from nose, vagina, rectum, or mouthSevere swelling, irritation, or sinus painAsthma symptoms that are worseningCommon side effects include:Stomach pain, upset stomach, heartburn, diarrhea, and nauseaHeadacheTirednessTooth painStuffy nose, cough, fever, hoarsenessMild rash BEFORE TAKING SINGULAIR:Before starting your treatment with Singulair, inform you doctor if you have any of the following conditions:Have an allergy to MontelukastHave phenylketonuriaIf you are planning a pregnancy or are pregnantCurrently breastfeeding your baby IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED:If you suspect an overdose, visit an emergency room or contact your poison control center. Residents in the US should call 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents may their provincial poison-control official. PROPER STORAGE OF SINGULAIR:This medication should be stored at room temperature and away from moisture and light. Do not keep this medication in a bathroom.
