Together they work to prevent the HIV cells from proliferating in the body.Truvada is used:in the treatment of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 (HIV-1) infectionreduces the chances of individuals who tested HIV-negative getting the HIV-1 infectionTruvada is an anti-HIV medication. Similar to other anti-HIV medications, Truvada can help in controlling the spread of the HIV infection in your body. This will lower your risk of acquiring complication from the virus (e.g. opportunistic infections such as cancer), and improve your well being.Truvada will not cure the HIV infection, nor does it prevent the virus from spreading to others via blood contamination or sexual contact. WARNING:Before starting treatment with this medication, be aware of the following:Severe Hepatomegaly and Lactic AcidosisFatal cases of hepatomegaly accompanied by steatosis and lactic acidosis have been conveyed when treated with Truvada and other antiretrovirals. Many of these reported cases involved women.Exercise caution when administering this medication to an uninfected individual or to a patient who does not present risk factors for disease of the liver. Stop treatment with Truvada if laboratory or clinical results suggest hepatoxicity or lactic acidosis.HBV InfectionThis medication is not recommended for treating chronic hepatitis B- virus or (HBV). The efficacy and safety of emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, has not been established in people who are coinfected with HIV-1 and HBV. Severe acute cases of HBV have been found in people who were infected with both HIV-1 and HBV, and then discontinued Truvada.Pre-Exposure ProphylaxisIndividuals who are prescribed Truvada for PrEP indications first need to be confirmed as HIV-negative, immediately before initiating and occasionally during use. Truvada should not be initiated as a treatment course for PrEP indications if symptoms and signs of the HIV-1 infection are at hand.SIDE EFFECTS:If you experience the following symptoms and signs while taking Truvada, you might be experiencing an allergic reaction. Seek emergency medical care immediately if you experience:hivesswelling of the face, lips, throat, or tonguedifficulty breathingThe build-up of lactic acid (lactic acidosis) is also a possibility with this medication, and can result in a fatality. Seek emergency medical assistance immediately, even if you experience the following symptoms in a mild form:muscle weakness or painnumbness, cold feeling in the legs and armstrouble breathinglight-headed, very weak, tired, feeling dizzynausea accompanied by vomiting, stomach painfluctuating or fast heart rateThe following list consists of some serious side effects reported by people who took Truvada. Telephone your doctor if you experience:Stomach pain, low fever, dark urine, jaundice, clay-colored stools, or nausea. These signs indicate liver damage.Increased thirst, urinating less, more, or slightlyQuick weight gain, feeling shortness of breath, swellingChills, fever, cough with green or yellow mucus, and fever indicate infection.Call your doctor at once if you have any of these other serious side effects:signs of liver damage - nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);increased thirst, urinating more or less than usual or not at all;swelling, rapid weight gain, feeling short of breath; orsigns of infection such as fever, chills, skin lesions, or cough with yellow or green mucus.Some common side effects include:mild nausea, diarrheatired feeling, headachedizziness, depressionstrange dreams, sleep disturbancesskin rash, mild itchingcough, stuffy or runny nosechanges in the location or shape of your body fatThis list of side effects is not exhaustive. For more information, please contact your doctor. BEFORE TAKING TRUVADA:If you have an allergy to tenofovir or emtricitabine, refrain from taking Truvada. This drug should not be taken with other drugs that contain tenofovir or emtricitabine such as Viread, Emtriva, and Trizivir.Inform your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions, which may require special tests or a dosage adjustment of tenofovir and emtricitabine:kidney or liver diseaseOsteopeniaHepatitis B infectionSome people might develop lactic acidosis, which is a life-threatening condition. Your chances of developing lactic acidosis are higher if you are a woman, have taken AIDS or HIV medication for a while, have liver disease, or are overweight. Discuss your risks about taking this medication with your doctor.Tenofovir and emtricitabine are deemed as safe by the FDA and therefore won’t harm your unborn child. Inform your doctor immediately if you are planning to have a baby or are pregnant during the treatment.HIV may be passed to your child if you do not take proper treatment during your pregnancy.
